Dr. Renato U. Solidum joined the Philippine public service in 1984 as a junior science researcher of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, in 1998 as one of its chief science researchers, and in 2003 as its Director.  In 2017, he was appointed as an Undersecretary for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change of the Department of Science and Technology, and at the same time serves as the Officer-in-Charge of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.  In 2019, he was also designated as the Officer-in-Charge of the Office of the Undersecretary for Science and Technology Services.

As a public servant, Dr. Solidum received the GAWAD CES, a Presidential award that recognizes members in the Career Executive Service (CES) for exemplary performance and significant contributions, particularly in the areas of innovation, information and communication technology, social services, administrative reforms and public policy.

In recognition of his contributions to disaster risk reduction in the Philippines, Dr. Solidum was awarded the Presidential Citation for Public Service, the Presidential Lingkod Bayan (Civil Servant)  Award by the Civil Service Commission, the Professional of the Year in the field of Geology by the Professional Regulation Commission, and the Excellence Award for Government Service by the Philippine Federation of Professional Associations.

Dr. Solidum is actively involved in international disaster and climate risk resilience initiatives, notably as subject matter expert and session chair in international disaster risk reduction platforms and fora.  He is also a Commissioner of the UNESCO Natural Sciences Commission.
